While the first edition covered exclusively aspects of the homological algebra of groups, rings, and modules, that is, topics from its first period of development, the new edition includes some additional material from the second period, together with algeba other, more recent results from the homological algebra of groups, rings, and modules.
I found it the most enlightening source when I started out learning homological algebra myself, and it algbera the book that demystified diagram chases for me.
The original version of this book discussed the ohmological period only; this new edition remains at the same introductory level, but it now introduces the second period as well. The general attitude was that it was a grotesque formalism, boring to learn, and not very useful once one had learned it. Rotman is a renowned textbook author in contemporary mathematics.

I agree this is funny as a joke, but I would have appreciated the authour’s effort in listing a detailed account of the lemma as in “Algebra” by Robert Ash. It is really worth looking at because “Methods” is a great book.
